Mary and Jim were a happily married couple for ten years before disaster struck. Unfortunately, one night they were drinking a little too much wine and got into a terrible conflict over money issues. Jim, normally a passive and well-respected computer programmer, lost it and threatened to choke Mary, after throwing a chair in her direction. Their 9 year old daughter heard the argument, became scared, and called the police. As a result, Jim was arrested for spousal abuse and taken to jail. To be released, he would need $50,000 bail.

The number of identity theft victims is increasing everyday. Yet it is being so downplayed that most people think that it would never happen to them. A lot of people think that identity theft is just a myth propagated by paranoid individuals, well the fact is, it’s not. Identity theft is a crime that can affect anybody from any demographic and that means you could be next. Identity theft awareness is better achieved by using examples of people who have undergone the ordeal of having their identity stolen and used in credit fraud. Below are a few examples of what happened to ordinary people.

Appointing a guardian ad litem for adults in Rhode Island divorce cases isn’t very common but it does occur. Typically a guardian ad litem is an attorney (though the guidelines have changed recently to include non-lawyers particularly experienced and trained in dealing with people and issues requiring a guardian’s skills) appointed by the court to represent the “best interests” of the individual and to make recommendations to the court as to what is in the person’s best interests.

Now I put “best interests” in quotes because it is significantly different from simply representing the individual.

How do most people select their attorney? Probably by word of mouth. Or maybe they have a family member or friend who practices law. This may be a good method in some instances. But what if you don’t know anyone who has used a lawyer, and can you really have confidence in the qualifications of your cousin Vinnie? What if there was a rating system that gave lawyers a numerical rating computed on various factors? Well on June 5th a company just launched a website service that does just that.

It is not too risky to affirm that intellectual property will soon be History.

Rules designed for the paper era are not useful, enforceable and cost-economic in the
Web era.

Here are a few reasons:

1) Intellectual property is not designed for the Web times

I strongly believe that intellectual property will soon be history, not because
Anarchism will succeed over Capitalism, but because the Net Economy will find new ways
to control ownership of words and patents.

Online gaming has been incredibly popular, particularly the various forms of poker. That all changed in 2006 when the federal government effectively banned a majority of online gaming. The gaming industry is finally fighting back.

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was a shock too much of the gaming industry. Although it had been slowly moving through Congress, there was no indication that it would be passed into law without a significant amount of debate and lobbying. In a typically congressional move, all of the uproar about a ban was bypassed when the Act was attached as a rider to legislation detailing how to protect our ports from terrorist attacks! Terrorist and online poker – a natural mix if ever there was one!

Grandparents rights in Iowa passed the Senate on March 13, 2007 allowing grandparents the right to petition the court. Many grandparents drew a hardy sigh of relief after being denied their grandchildren possibly for years. State to state the the laws are different on the rights of grandparents. Divorce, single parent families, and hostilities between families can make it nearly impossible for a grandparent to see a grandchild. Unfortunately some parents have even learned to use their children as leverage against family members including grandparents. When vindictiveness and spite are used the grandparent is not the only one suffering from the separation. The child loses out on time spent with a a family member who has so much to give.

Using copyright to protect your music
If you want to get published, or even if you self publish your work, you will be sending copies to your agents, record companies, or other individuals. Can you trust those who get hold of your work to respect your rights, or will you discover one day that your music is being passed off as someone else’s work, while you miss out on the royalties.
Having seen my own work turn up in the hands of plagiarists who have claimed it as their own, I now take copyright very seriously, and would urge anyone to follow these simple steps.
